TL;DR · What you'll learn

  • 1 Anthropic announced Claude Fable 5, released to the public as its most capable model yet. It is the first model to combine Mythos-class capabilities with safety measures.
  • 2 The previous-generation model, 'Claude Mythos preview,' turned out to be able to find thousands of cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and was withheld from public release due to the risk of misuse.
  • 3 Instead, it was provided to experts protecting the world's critical software and used to fix vulnerabilities before attackers could exploit them.
  • 4 Fable 5 includes an unprecedentedly cautious safety system that automatically detects requests in high-risk areas such as cybersecurity and biology.
  • 5 Requests judged to be high-risk are redirected to Opus 4.8, a design that harnesses Fable's capabilities while avoiding cyber and biological risks.
  • 6 Fable 5 is designed for ambitious work, able to handle complex tasks in finance, research, economics, and law for days at a time without human supervision.
  • 7 It closes by encouraging users to tackle the kind of hard problems that, in hindsight, make you wonder 'why did this take so many years to solve,' expressing high expectations for what users will do with it.

Overview and Announcement of Fable 5

Anthropic has released Claude Fable 5 to the public. It is the most capable model the company has ever shipped, and is positioned as the first model to combine Mythos-class capabilities with safety measures suitable for general use.

The previous-generation Mythos preview was capable enough to detect thousands of cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and Anthropic declined to release it publicly out of concern that the same capability could be repurposed for attacks. It was then offered on a limited basis to security experts protecting the world's critical software infrastructure and used to fix vulnerabilities.

An Innovative Safety System

Fable 5 ships with the most carefully designed safety system in the Claude series to date. Requests touching high-risk domains such as cybersecurity and biology are automatically detected and reviewed.

Requests judged to be high-risk are redirected to Opus 4.8. This lets users harness Fable's exceptional capabilities while preventing uses that carry cyberattack or biological risk. The safeguards are currently set broadly, but are slated for continual refinement so that safe requests can be better allowed.

Advanced Autonomy and Areas of Application

Fable 5 is designed for ambitious work and can stay engaged with a problem far longer than previous models. It has high autonomy and can operate for days at a time without human intervention.

Beyond coding, it can handle complex tasks in finance, research, economics, and law, areas that previously always required human supervision. Anthropic urged users to 'take on problems that, in hindsight, make you wonder why they took so many years to solve,' signaling its hope that users will unlock the model's potential.

Editor's Take

In the official Fable 5 announcement, the weighty design idea is a safety architecture that auto-detects high-risk requests and redirects them to Opus 4.8. Choosing outer routing rather than weakening the model itself to make Mythos-class capability publicly available is telling — it separates capability and safety instead of fusing them in one model. Paired with the goal of 'days of unsupervised continuous work,' it reveals the direction of safety design for the agent era.
