Inside Anthropic, the $965 Billion AI Juggernaut | The Circuit

Dario Amodei is portrayed as a researcher who has spent years warning about the dangers of AI, yet the company he leads, Anthropic, has now transformed into a frontier AI powerhouse valued at nearly $1 trillion. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, the company was initially seen as a small lab.

Today, however, Anthropic is depicted as a company powerful enough to wipe out tens of billions of dollars in software market value, compete for defense-related business, and build models strong enough to unsettle modern cybersecurity. Early testers reportedly even said, "This is a superweapon, please don’t release it."

Anthropic is jointly led by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, with Dario serving as CEO and Daniela as president. Dario is responsible for the big-picture vision and research direction, while Daniela coordinates the broader leadership team and runs day-to-day operations.

The two say they were close from childhood and had always wanted to do something significant together. Dario describes the structure as "incredibly freeing" because he does not have to report directly to anyone, while Daniela handles execution. When they disagree, they say, neither side really "wins."

Anthropic now sits at the center of a technological arms race in which major governments are competing for AI dominance. Dario openly criticizes rival companies that, in his view, downplay risk management, comparing them to reckless gamblers. He has also condemned AI chip exports to China, likening them to exporting nuclear weapons to North Korea.

Dario argues that a Chinese lead in AI capability would pose a serious threat to the United States and to democracy. Even while recognizing that this stance could strain Anthropic’s relationships with partner chipmakers, he continues to press for export controls and insists on saying what he believes.

Dario is candid about the possibility that Anthropic’s technology could contribute to catastrophic outcomes. In his view, however, that risk does not arise from Anthropic alone but from structural factors tied to the nature of the technology and the behavior of many countries and companies.

He explains Anthropic’s position through an airline analogy: it may be possible to build an airline that is 10 times safer than competitors, but no one can reduce the crash rate to zero. Anthropic spends half its internal resources on risk reduction, and its aim, he says, is to push the probability of disaster as low as possible.

Leading one of the world’s most advanced AI companies brings extreme pressure, but Dario says the way he stays mentally steady is surprisingly simple. He plays video games on weekends, spends time with his sister Daniela, and takes trips to Italy with his wife.

He also keeps horses in Italy, and says that simply sitting beside a horse named "Calypso" helps him calm down. The remark that "she knows nothing about this AI stuff, she’s just a happy horse" offers a brief glimpse of the person behind the CEO of a massive technology company.
