US National Security Order Suspends Claude Fable 5 as Anthropic Clashes With Trump

FRANCE 24 opens by suggesting that Anthropic's own warnings about the dangers of its systems have now rebounded on the company. In its statement, Anthropic says, "In compliance with a legal government directive, we are removing access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users."

The company was effectively forced into a full shutdown only days after launch. Fable 5 had been presented as a version for general users that paired Mythos-level capability with added safety controls, after Mythos itself had been considered too risky for broad public release.

In recent weeks, Anthropic had been publicly arguing for stronger oversight across the AI industry, even winning support from the Pope and treating a temporary pause in AI development as a policy option worth considering. One executive, as quoted in the segment, said the industry has "an accelerator but no brake pedal," and that Anthropic wanted to help build that brake pedal.

Then the US government ordered the company to cut off foreign access to Fable 5 and Mythos, citing national security concerns. In practice, the service was then disabled globally for all users.

FRANCE 24 says the clash stems from Anthropic's position that its technology should not be used in autonomous lethal weapons. The segment also includes a Trump-side voice arguing that Anthropic should not be trusted to make such decisions and accusing the company's leadership of ideological bias.

The program frames the issue as larger than one company, placing it within a broader US effort to deny China access to advanced AI and preserve technological dominance. In that reading, Anthropic's safety-first posture has become one factor intensifying its conflict with the US government.
